ANNAPOLIS, Maryland - After a successful day at Navy on Saturday, the Salem Men's Water Polo team looked to complete the sweep of the weekend as they took on another doubleheader. They faced off with George Washington in Game 1, and then Johns Hopkins for a late afternoon contest in Game 2. Unfortunately, it was a tough day for the Tiger faithful as Salem fell in both contests. They played out as follows:
George Washington 23, Salem 6
In Game 1, Salem had a tough task in front of them in George Washington, one of the top collegiate teams in the country. Salem played well in the first half, but struggled to keep up with the offensive output of the Colonials. In the second half, it was more of the same as Salem would muster just one more goal in the second half and fall by a score of 23-6. On the bright side, Goncalo Silva played well in goal with 12 saves, and Nikola Krstonosic scored 3 goals in the contest to lead the Tigers in scoring.
Johns Hopkins 18, Salem 17
In the second contest of the day, Salem had a much more closely contested game. Salem jumped out to an early lead, and held that slim lead into the halftime break. However, after the intermission, John Hopkins roared back with a strong 3rd quarter of their own. Down the stretch, each team traded goals, with Salem coming up just short in the final moments of the contest 18-17. Despite the loss, there were still some bright spots for the Tigers. Julen Alonso logged 9 saves in net for the Tigers, and Ivan Zivojinovic led the way in scoring with 6 goals.Â
Despite the disappointing end to the weekend, there is still a lot of exciting action ahead for the Salem men's water polo program. They will be in action again on September 17th as they take part in the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, Maryland.
