BRIDGEPORT, West Virginia - After a long season of matchups on the road, the Salem men's water polo team finally got the chance to face off with familiar competition in their home pool. The Tigers earned 3 wins over 2 days, including a Senior Day sweep. Each contest played out as follows:
Salem 20, Washington and Jefferson 6
In Game 1, the Tigers had their second game of the season against the Presidents of Washington and Jefferson. Salem had the hot hand offensively, and decisively earned the 20-6 win. Nicholas Duncan and Timothy Fischer led the way for Salem offensively with 3 goals each. Mateja Cerovic and Ewan Rios tallied 6 saves in goal for Salem.
Gannon 28. Salem 22
In Game 2, the Tigers squared off with rival Gannon. It was a shootout from the opening whistle, and the Tigers even led 11-9 at half. However, Gannon unleashed a second half rally that overwhelmed the Tigers resulting in the 28-22 loss. Statistically, Salem was led by a staggering 10 goals from Danko Kesic. In goal, Mateja Cerovic recorded 9 total saves.
Salem 19, McKendree 17
On Sunday, Salem had another WWPA matchup, this time against McKendree. The Tigers opened well, but neither team truly took control. The game sat at a 10-10 tie at the half. This time, it was the Tigers who found the second half rally and snagged a tight 19-17 win over the Bearcats. Senior Marko Zivojinovic, who was honored after this contest, led Salem with 5 goals. Mateja Cerovic added 5 saves in goal for the Tigers.Â
Salem 16, Mercyhurst 13
For the final game of the weekend. The Tigers took on Mercyhurst. They honored seniors JD Fenner and Marko Zivojinovic before the game, and the Tigers leaned on those seniors to pull away with the 16-13 win. Marko Zivojinovic led Salem with 4 goals, and JD Fenner also added a goal. Ewan Rios added 12 saves in the victory.
Energized from the success at home, the Tigers hit the road for their final regular season contest of the fall on November 15th when they take on Johns Hopkins.
