SALEM, West Virginia - In the final leg of today's UHC Family Medicine Day tripleheader, the Salem men's wrestling team hosted the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears in their final home dual of the season. Salem also honored its first senior class with Sean Johnson and Kourdell Todd ahead of the night's contest. After the festivities, the Tigers earned a hardy 40-13 win over the Golden Bears.
After coming up short in the opening bout, David Makupson got Salem going by earning a pin to even the team score at 6-6. Riley Curran put the Tigers ahead when he tallied up enough points to earn a tech fall in the next bout. The Golden Bears forfeited the next three bouts, but earned some points back with a Major Decision win in the 174 pound class. However, Clayton Downs got Salem back on track with a tech fall of his own in the 184 pound bout. West Virginia Tech rallied in the subsequent match, and that set the stage for the final point scoring opportunity for the Tigers. Kourdell Todd got the crowd in T. Edward Davis Gymnasium up in an uproar when he pinned his opponent just 40 seconds into his Senior Day bout. With the win secured by the Todd pin, Seth Thomas added some icing on the cake when he earned a tech fall win in the lone extra bout of the night.Â
With this big home dual win on Senior Day, Salem will head down to Gilmer County for their next set of competition on February 21st where the Tigers will have a pair of duals with Glenville State and Davis and Elkins.
