TIFFIN, Ohio - After concluding the dual portion of their season, the Salem men's wrestling team made the trip up to Northwest Ohio on Saturday afternoon to compete in the NCAA Super Regional III for the first time in program history. The Tigers made a strong showing in the event, and finished with two regional placers as Sean Johnson and Seth Thomas both finished 5th in their respective weight classes.
The most successful wrestlers in the event for Salem were obviously Sean Johnson and Seth Thomas. Johnson finished with a 3-2 record on the day. After an early loss, Johnson bounced back with a pin on Davis & Elkins' Nathaniel Taylor. He then grinded out a tough 2-1 win over host Tiffin's Bret Minnick. To round out the day. Johnson pulled off a major decision win over Bluefield State's Enrique Sanchez.
Seth Thomas had a very similar day to his teammate Johnson. Thomas was defeated in his first bout, but then took a major decision win over Bluefield State's Kairyn Hall. From there, he added pins in his next two bouts against Grand Valley State's Maddox Simcoe and Davenport's Cody Ueberroth.
Outside of Johnson and Thomas, David Makupson was able to pick up an individual win in the event for the Tigers when he defeated Davenport's Jacob Harris by tech fall.
Although this event concludes the 2024-2025 season for the Tigers, it has been an incredible introductory season for Salem wrestling including 5 dual wins and the program's first ever individual Mountain East Conference Champion, Sean Johnson. Head Coach Cole Houser will be primed to build on that success as he builds the program in preparation for the 2025-2025 campaign for the Tigers.
