FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The Salem University wrestling team turned in a strong showing at the Fairmont State University Open on Saturday, highlighted by an individual championship and multiple placewinners against a deep regional field.
Senior Seth Thomas led the way for the Tigers with a dominant run at 165 pounds, capturing the individual title. Thomas advanced through the bracket with a series of decisive victories, including a win in the semifinal round to secure his place in the finals. He capped off the day by earning the championship, giving Salem its lone title of the tournament.
At 157 pounds, Seth Holt delivered an impressive performance to finish third overall. Holt opened the tournament with a quick pin in just 39 seconds and continued to wrestle his way through the bracket, rebounding from an early setback to earn a spot on the podium.
Fabian Rivera represented Salem at 133 pounds, battling through the consolation bracket to earn a sixth-place finish. Rivera picked up a key win late in the tournament to secure his placement and valuable experience against quality competition.
Salem also saw Elijah Hunter place at 141 pounds, finishing seventh. Hunter recorded multiple victories during the day, including a pin and a technical fall in the consolation rounds to fight his way into the placement matches.
At 125 pounds, Ethan Moore competed in a crowded field, receiving an opening-round bye before facing tough opposition later in the tournament.
The Tigers used the event as an opportunity to gain mat time and test themselves against regional opponents, with several wrestlers showing continued progress as the season moves forward.
