Box Score SALEM, W. Va. (Oct. 18, 2017) – Throughout the season, improvement for the Salem University Tigers women's soccer team has come in dribs and drabs.
A few touch passes connecting in one-two-three sequences falling one action short of fully igniting, or a defensive formation holding up at the point of attack only to leave one vulnerable spot exposed.
On Wednesday, celebrating seniors
Amanda Allred and
Audrey Jones for senior day, all those slight week-to-week improvements connected, like a brain creating new neural pathways, generating an offensive explosion in the Tigers' 6-1 victory over the Lincoln University Lions.
Midfielder
Jasmine Seaton was the catalyst, finding a seam up the middle of the defense and breaking free for a one-on-one opportunity with the goalie, approaching the net from the right and kicking the ball to the back-left corner for the first goal of the match roughly three minutes in.
Seaton found herself isolated with the goalie again, receiving a beautiful pass from
Jackie Zavala and, while bearing down on the goal at full tilt, delivering a nice juke past the goalie and softly putting the ball into the net at the 25:45 mark.
Auli Hanks and
Julia Nilsson added two more goals in the first half to give the Tigers a commanding 4-0 lead at the break.
In the first half, Salem University had a 19-5 edge in shots, pressing the action and earning four corner kicks to Lincoln's one.
Jackie Zavala and
Vanessa Moreno kept the pressure on in the second half, adding a goal each, with
Elizabeth Tamez assisting on Moreno's goal.
Tigers' goalie
Emily Pontiakos held a shutout through the first 65 minutes of the match with three saves before Salem Head Coach
Kennedy Kabiru substituted
Tyrah Bell for some extended minutes with the match mostly decided. In 25 minutes, Bell saved three shots, surrendering the lone Lincoln goal on a penalty kick by the Lions' Diana Martinez.
For the match, the Tigers more than doubled the Lions' 11 shots with 27 of their own, including 18 on goals, and held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. With the win, the Tigers improve to 4-9-0. Salem's next match will be on the road on Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. against Glenville State College. For live stats and video,
