Box Score FAIRMONT, W. Va. (Oct. 28, 2017) – Looking for a spark of momentum, Salem University Tigers women's soccer's
Kelsea Freiling sprinted across the field with a clear line towards a lackadaisical pass like a jet on a runway.
Before anyone could react, Freiling dribbled the ball a few feet to her right into clear space on the outskirts of the goalie's box, bending a shot around a line of defenders towards the left corner of the net.
At the last moment, Fairmont State University goalie Shawna Graham dove towards the ball, smothering it and, perhaps, the Tigers' best scoring opportunity of the match in a 3-0 Salem loss.
On a miserably cold and rainy afternoon, the Tigers' scoring opportunities were quickly extinguished as both teams struggled moving the ball against physical defenses and the elements.
Fairmont State broke through roughly 30 minutes into the match on a perfectly placed shot from Louise Welch, arching the ball high from long range, dropping the ball through a narrow window for a 1-0 lead Fairmont would take into halftime.
In the second half, penalties—Salem committed seven fouls to Fairmont's three—cost the Tigers two more goals.
A foul in the box setup a penalty kick from Fairmont's Gabriella Mascaro for a 2-0 lead 60 minutes into the match. Five minutes later, another foul led to a third goal when Mascaro's free kick found Kellie Norris for a quick-hitting goal.
Fairmont State had a 13-10 advantage in shots, including a 10-7 edge in shots on goals. Both teams finished with seven saves and three corner kicks.
With the loss, the Tigers drop to 4-11 for the year. Salem University will close out its season on the road next week, facing Lincoln University on Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. and against Oakland City University on Nov. 4 at noon.
