WISE, Va. (March 29, 2018) — Playing in gusty winds reaching 15-20 miles per hour, the Salem University Tiger men's tennis team defeated teh University of Virginia at Wise Cavaliers 9-0 to claim its second shutout victory of the season.
Leading the way was freshmen Patryk Garwacki and Gregor Lainer, who teamed for a victory in doubles and won their individual matches. Antonio Shaw and Andres Padilla showed great poise in picking up a crucial win at the No. 2 doubles spot to put Salem up 3-0 heading into singles matches.
"We played great in doubles today, especially Antonio and Andres, who pulled out a tough match," Head Coach Todd Tucker said. "The guys were extremely focused today. They played at a very high level. It was a good match to prepare for next week as we face three top 15 nationally ranked teams."
With their second win in a row, the Tigers improve to 7-11 on the season. The Cavaliers drop to 2-11. Salem will return to action on April 1 with a match against No. 14-ranked Bluefield State College in Bluefield, West Virginia.
