Erin Zappia, who helped Salem University set a swimming relay school record, has been named Conference Carolinas Women's Swimmer of the Week, it was announced Wednesday. Zappia becomes the second Tiger to earn swimmer of the week honors since Salem joined Conference Carolinas for women's and men's swimming this season.
 
A freshman from Brisbane, Australia, Zappia helped Salem set a new school record in the 200-yard medley relay at the 2019 ECAC Winter Championships this past weekend in East Meadow, N.Y. Zappia was the third leg in a posted time of 1:55.37, which was a full two seconds better than the previous school record. She teamed with Marta Gruszczynska, Lauren Platz and Chloe Smart to break the record.
 
In addition, Zappia finished third out of 10 non-Division I swimmers and 25th out of 92 swimmers overall in the 50-yard butterfly at the Winter Championships. She swam in three individual events and five relay events during the three-day meet.
 
Zappia joins Tiger men's swimmer Brady Samuels among conference swimmer of the week winners. Samuels was named Conference Carolinas Men's Swimmer of the Week during November.
 
After taking off for Christmas Break, Salem is back in the pool January 18 as the Tigers play host to Davis & Elkins College in a men's and women's dual meet.
