Fernando Gomez Perez and
Brady Samuels each posted two individual wins and were both part of two relay wins as Salem University ended regular season competition with a 158-104 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan College in NCAA Division II men's swimming Saturday at Salem Pool. Including Friday's wins over Bethany College and Frostburg State University, the Tigers finish the regular season on a three-meet winning streak.
Â
Prior to the start of the meet, Salem honored its four seniors: men's swimmers Gabe Craig,
Milos Popovic and
Michael Rojas, and women's swimmer Marta Gruszczynska.
Â
Although the Tigers were celebrating Senior Day, it was a quartet of freshmen and sophomores who helped Salem (6-2) jump out to an early lead with a win in the 200 yard medley relay. Perez was joined by fellow freshman Mateus Jedrzejewski, while Samuels was joined by fellow sophomore
Austin Kephart in the opening men's event.
Â
Jedrzejewski, Perez and Samuels also teamed with
Greg Smith for a win in the 400 yard freestyle medley in the final event of the afternoon. Jedrzejewski also posted an individual win in the 50 yard breast stroke.
Â
Perez won the 100 yard breast stroke as Tiger swimmers took the top three spots to beat out three West Virginia Wesleyan swimmers. Perez also recorded a three-second win in the 200 yard individual medley.
Â
Samuels won the 100 yard butterfly by more than a full second and edged out teammate
Zach Bell by 0.22 seconds to win the 100 yard freestyle. Bell also recorded a pair of individual wins in the 50 yard and 200 yard freestyle.
Â
In addition to the relay win, Kephart won the 50 yard backstroke and became the Tigers' fourth two-time individual winner with a dramatic win in the 500 yard freestyle. Kephart led for most of the race before West Virginia Wesleyan's Marc Bennett drew even at the end of the 19th lap. Kephart made a push in the final 25 yards to regain the lead and win by 0.70 seconds.
Â
Salem will be idle until mid-February when the Tigers head to Charlotte, N.C., to compete in the 2020 Conference Carolinas Championship. Salem is in its first as year as a Conference Carolinas member in swimming and is making its first-ever appearance in the Conference Carolinas Championship. The meet takes place February 12-15.
