GLENVILLE, West Virginia - Ever since the program was launched last fall, the Salem men's wrestling program under the direction of Cole Houser has been building towards finally getting out on the mat in competition. That goal was fulfilled today when the Salem Tigers headed down to Glenville to compete in the Glenville State Invitational.
13 wrestling programs from all over the east coast competed in the competition, and the competition was fierce all day long down in Gilmer County. 7 wrestlers competed for the Tigers in the event, and Salem certainly made their mark in their program debut.
The most successful showing for the Tigers was from David Makupson. Despite an early loss in the 141 pound weight class, Makupson battled back to defeat Caleb Wetzel of Ashland by decision, and then Danny Capozzoli of Millersville by tech fall in the consolation bracket.
Riley Curran also made a strong showing for the Tigers. He opened the day with a win over Caleb Everhart of Fairmont State, but came up short in the second round of the competition. The final individual win of the day for the Tigers came from Seth Holt who picked up a win over Belmont Abbey's Alex Ropski.
After making their competition debut, Salem will host their first ever home wrestling dual on Thursday, November 7th at 7 PM in T. Edward Davis Gymnasium in Salem, West Virginia.
