Starting off as an football wrestling, and track & field star at North Hills High School near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Stern came to Salem to play football in 1969. He made an immediate impact as he earned a starting spot as a tackle on the Tiger offensive line in 5 games during his freshman season. From there, he would not miss a start for the next three seasons. Acting as an anchor for the beginning of the 1970's dominant era of Tigers football, Stern was heralded as one of the best tackles to every play in the WVIAC. After graduating Salem in 1973 with a degree in physical education, he earned professional tryouts with the Cincinnati Bengals and Oakland Raiders.
