Byron E. Gibson was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia and graduated from Salem College in 1956 following four outstanding years as a collegiate athlete. He was named to the All-West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) basketball team and won the WVIAC Tennis Singles Championship in 1956.
 
Gibson was named to the WVIAC All-Time Athletic Team in 1974 by the West Virginia Writers Association and was selected to the 1966 edition of “Outstanding Young Men of America”.
 
Following graduation, Gibson served as an instructor and athletic coach at Salem College prior to entering active military service in 1957, After completion of military service, he received a Master’s Degree from West Virginia University and became a Civilian Athletic and Recreation Specialist for the Army in 1960 and served as a member of the staff and faculty at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York from 1961-66.
 
Gibson distinguished himself through outstanding achievements in the field of Armed Forces Recreation. He demonstrated superior professional skills, knowledge and leadership in implementing major change in Army morale, welfare and recreation programs.
