John Christie attended Salem College on a basketball scholarship and graduated in 1943. He was captain of the Salem Basketball team his senior year, serving for part of that time as “active coach”, when the regular coach was drafted into the army for World War II. Christie also coached the basketball team again in 1953 for part of a season, alleviating a crisis situation. As a student, Christie lettered four times in basketball and played baseball for two years.

Christie was always strongly supportive of Salem College. He married head cheerleader Mary Lou Curtis and the two had eight children – six of whom graduated from Salem like their parents. Christie’s brother Paul and cousin Don are both Salem Hall of Fame members.

He served for 36 years on the Salem College Board of Directors and was a member of the Tiger Elite since 1939.
