A native of Salem, WV, Dr. Nell C. Bailey earned a bachelor’s degree in Teaching Education from Salem College in 1956 and was a four-year member of the Tiger Cheerleading squad. After graduation, she went on to receive an Ed. D degree from Indiana University at Bloomington and her Master's of Education degree from Kent State.

Dr. Bailey was the Dean of Women at Salem College from 1965 to 1968. Following her time at Salem, Dr. Bailey took a position at Illinois State as the Assistant Dean of Students where she managed women’s off-campus housing, counseled students, advised Associated Women’s Students, and represented the Division of student Affairs on various University committees.

After a stint at Bethany College as Director of continuing Education, Dr. Bailey returned to Salem College and, in 1977, was named Dean for Student Development.

In 1979 she took a position as Dean of Students at Marshall University and became Marshall’s first female vice president when she was named Vice President and Dean of Student Affairs in 1984. In 1992, she left the position to return to teach courses in student affairs in 1984. In 1992, she left the and served as special assistant to the university president and the Dean of the Center for Adult and Extended Education.
