Salem University Athletic Hall of Fame
Wiegand attended Salem College on an athletic scholarship, graduating in 1963, when he was voted Most Outstanding Athlete his senior year.
At Salem, he played football and baseball for four years, and basketball for one, earning an additional eight letters. In football, Wiegand made the WVIAC All-Conference Team every year and set numerous records, including the single game reception yards (200), receptions (11) in a single game, receiving yards in a season (1603), touchdown receptions (17) in a season, and longest reception (91 yards).
He also captained a winning baseball team for two years and was named to all-conference both seasons, striking out 15 players in one game, and driving in seven RBIs in another.
Before Salem, Wiegand was named to seven all-star teams at his high school, and voted most outstanding athlete in 1956, earning five letters there, He also played football and baseball at Camp Lejeune for the marines and saw combat in Beirut.
A retired schoolteacher and coach, Wiegand was elected to the Butler County (Pennsylvania) and Mars High School’s Hall of Fame.
