    Women's Field Hockey

Prior to the development of more opportunities for women's sports in the 1970's and 1980's, women's athletics at Salem were loosely structured. However, a group of female students from Maryland and New Jersey met in 1965, and set out to create a field hockey program at Salem College. In 1966, they had their first official season, and found some immediate success playing many of the small schools around West Virginia. However, despite only losing one contest in the first three years of the program, the funding needed to pay officials was cut in 1969, and the program would not make a return after that. However, this was not the end of their collegiate field hockey careers. Many of the student-athletes would go on to be field hockey coaches and officials at various levels across the country, and in doing so sealed the impact of the short lived but successful women's field hockey program at Salem College.
